Fountain Nozzles: Choosing a Spray Pattern
The nozzle decides the look of a fountain and how much pump it needs. Match the two and keep the spray inside the pond.

Choose the pattern you like, check the flow and pressure that nozzle needs, confirm the thread or stem size fits your pump, and keep the spray height under about half the width of the pond.
Fountain nozzles shape the same flow of water into very different displays. Bell and water-lily patterns are low and calm and cope well with wind. Tiered and jet patterns are taller and more dramatic, and lose more water to splash and drift.
What to compare
- Pattern and wind exposure. Low, heavy patterns hold together in a breeze; fine sprays drift.
- Flow and pressure required. The nozzle packaging or manual states what it needs from the pump.
- Connection size. Check the thread or riser diameter against your pump outlet.
- Jet size. Fine holes block easily and need a good pre-filter on the pump.
- Telescopic riser. Lets you set the nozzle just above the water surface as levels change.
Where this type works, and where it does not
A good fit when
- An ornamental pond or basin
- You want sound and surface movement
- The pump has an adjustable flow control
Look elsewhere when
- Water lilies sit directly under the spray, as they dislike constant splashing
- The basin is narrow and exposed to wind

Common questions
Why is my fountain spray uneven?
Usually a partly blocked nozzle or a low water level. Disconnect the power, rinse the nozzle and the pump pre-filter, and top up the pond.
