Fountain Pumps: What to Look For
Fountain pumps are small, low-head pumps matched to a nozzle or ornament. The fountain head sets the requirement, not the pond.

Start from the fountain head, nozzle or statue: its documentation gives the flow and lift it needs. Choose a pump that meets that at your spray height and has an adjustable flow control.
A fountain pump has a different job from a filter or waterfall pump. It has to push a modest amount of water through a nozzle with enough pressure to form the spray pattern, and it often does so through fine jets that block easily.
Keep the spray height to no more than about half the width of the pond or basin, so that wind does not carry the water out and slowly empty it.
What to compare
- Flow and lift for your nozzle. Each spray pattern needs a particular flow and pressure. Check the nozzle or ornament documentation first.
- Adjustable flow. A built-in control lets you set the spray height and keep the water inside the basin.
- Pre-filter. Fine jets clog quickly. A foam or cage pre-filter keeps debris out and is easy to rinse.
- Low-water protection. Small basins lose water fast, and a pump that runs dry can overheat.
- Cord length. The plug must reach a protected outdoor socket without an extension lead.
Where this type works, and where it does not
A good fit when
- A decorative spray, bell or tiered nozzle
- A spitter, statue or container water feature
- Light circulation in a small ornamental pond
Look elsewhere when
- You need to feed a biological filter
- You want a waterfall or stream
- The pond carries a lot of debris or blanket weed

Common questions
How high will a fountain pump spray?
It depends on the pump and the nozzle together, so there is no general figure. Manufacturers usually state a spray height for each pump and nozzle combination. Narrow jets spray higher than wide patterns on the same pump.
Is a fountain enough to aerate a fish pond?
A fountain adds some surface movement, which helps gas exchange, but it does not replace filtration, and in hot weather a heavily stocked pond may still need a dedicated air pump.
