Editorial Standards
The rules we hold our guides to.
These are the rules we hold every page on Pond Pumps Adviser to. They exist so that you can judge how much weight to give what you read here.
1. We are honest about how we know things
Our guides are desk research. They are based on published manufacturer information, retailer listings, standard hydraulic formulas and widely used pond-keeping rules of thumb. We do not claim hands-on testing, laboratory measurement or personal ownership of products unless a page states exactly what was done.
2. We do not invent data
We do not publish made-up prices, star ratings, review counts, stock levels, discounts, test results or specifications. If we cannot find a reliable figure, we leave it out and say so.
3. Specifications are sourced and dated
Where we quote a product’s flow, head or power consumption, we take it from the manufacturer’s documentation where we can, note where a figure comes from a retailer instead, and record when it was checked. Manufacturers revise products, so always confirm against the current listing and manual before buying.
4. Rules of thumb are labelled as rules of thumb
Turnover rates, waterfall flow per inch and head allowances are useful starting points, not laws. Sources differ, and we tell you when they do. Where your equipment manual is more specific, follow the manual.
5. Calculations show their assumptions
Our calculators and worked examples state the formulas and assumptions they use, so that you can check them. They produce estimates for planning, not guarantees of performance.
6. Recommendations follow the pond, not the commission
Some links on this site are affiliate links. A product is never recommended because it is larger, more expensive or pays a higher commission. Advice about which type of pump suits which pond is the same whether or not you buy through our links. See our affiliate disclosure.
7. Safety comes first
Pond equipment combines electricity and water. We tell readers to disconnect power before handling equipment, to use GFCI (RCD) protection, to follow manufacturer instructions and local codes, and to use qualified electricians. We do not give instructions for electrical repairs.
8. We correct mistakes
If we get something wrong, we fix it and note significant changes. Details are in our corrections policy. To report an error, use the contact page.
9. Images are properly licensed
Photographs are used under licences that permit commercial use, and the sources are listed on our image credits page. Photographs illustrate topics in general; unless a caption says otherwise they do not show a specific product or an installation we have tested.
