How We Research and Compare Products

Our comparisons are desk research, not lab tests. This page explains exactly what that means.

When Pond Pumps Adviser compares products, the comparison is desk research. We have not bench-tested the pumps. This page explains what that means, what we check, and how far you should rely on it.

What we do

  1. Choose products that can be verified. We look for pumps from manufacturers that publish specifications, manuals and, ideally, performance curves, and that are widely available.
  2. Collect the published figures. Maximum flow, maximum head, power consumption, pump type, outlet size, cord length and warranty.
  3. Cross-check sources. We compare the manufacturer’s documentation with current retailer listings. Where they disagree, we report the disagreement rather than choosing the more flattering figure.
  4. Record the date. Each comparison states when the figures were checked.
  5. Explain the trade-offs. We describe what each pump is suited to and its main limitation, based on its specifications and intended use.

What we do not do

  • We do not measure flow, noise, power draw or durability ourselves.
  • We do not give star ratings or scores, because we have no test data to base them on.
  • We do not publish prices, discounts or stock levels, which change constantly.
  • We do not name a single “best” pump. The right pump depends on your pond volume, head height and budget.

How to use our comparisons

Treat a comparison as a starting shortlist and a lesson in reading specifications. Before buying, work out your own target flow and head with the pump size calculator, find the manufacturer’s pump curve, and confirm the flow at your head height. Check the current listing for the exact model number, because manufacturers update products and retailers sometimes list older versions.

On many pages our links open a live Amazon search for a type of product rather than one fixed item. Listings change, sell out and are replaced, and a search shows you what is actually available today. Where we name a specific model, the link searches for that model. If we test products in future, those articles will say clearly what was tested, how, for how long and under what conditions, and they will be kept distinct from desk-research comparisons.
